Simon Stiell, the Executive Secretary of UN Climate Change, delivered a compelling speech during the opening session of the Bonn Climate Change Conference. Above all, he highlighted the critical juncture we find ourselves in regarding the battle against climate change. Recent reports from the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) have unequivocally demonstrated the worsening state of our planet, while our efforts to combat this crisis are lagging behind.
Importantly, Stiell acknowledged the formidable challenges faced by the conference delegates, who must navigate the delicate balance between their national interests and the greater global good. He urged them to prioritize the common good, emphasizing that such actions ultimately serve their own national interests in the long run. Stiell stressed that every life is valuable and should never be sacrificed due to financial constraints, excessive energy consumption, reliance on fossil fuels, or the commodification of nature.
Certainly, our ultimate goal is to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius and foster a sustainable future that benefits everyone. To achieve this, Stiell called for progress in various areas and emphasized the pivotal role of the Global Stocktake in assessing our advancements and bridging the gap in meeting the commitments of the Paris Agreement. Moreover, he underlined the need for prompt action, adequate means of implementation, and innovative approaches to mitigate climate change.
Meanwhile, during his speech, Stiell touched upon the progress made in the Sharm El Sheik agreement regarding loss and damage, as well as the ongoing discussions taking place during the conference. In the same vein, he underscored the significance of establishing a strong agreement on a Just Transition. Such an agreement can drive ambitious climate action and foster trust to facilitate transformative development.
Stiell highlighted the Global Goal on Adaptation as a crucial framework for enhancing resilience and monitoring progress in adapting to the impacts of climate change. Additionally, he emphasized the importance of the budget for the next biennium, recognizing its role in supporting the vital work of the participating Parties.
Stiell emphasized that we stand at a tipping point and must expedite our actions to address climate change. He called upon the Parties to demonstrate unwavering commitment in implementing the Paris Agreement and to collaborate closely in order to achieve significant progress leading up to COP28. In summary, Stiell’s speech resoundingly stressed the urgent need for action, cooperation, and steadfast commitment to combat climate change and forge a sustainable future for all.
