A group of employees at oil major Shell recently penned an open letter expressing concerns about the pace and direction of the company’s shift towards renewable energy.

The employees highlighted the urgency of addressing climate change and emphasised the pivotal role that the energy sector, particularly companies like Shell, plays in combating the global crisis. They called for an accelerated transition away from fossil fuels to renewable energy to rapidly reduce carbon emissions.

The employees stressed the importance of aligning the company’s actions with its stated commitments to sustainability and climate action. They urged Shell to prioritise investments in renewable energy technologies and rapidly scale up clean energy initiatives.

The letter also emphasised the significance of engaging with stakeholders, including employees, in decision-making regarding the energy transition. Transparency, collaboration and involving all stakeholders are necessary in driving a successful and effective shift towards renewable energy, it said.

It is clear the signees are deeply committed to driving positive change within the company and are passionate about the role Shell can play in advancing a sustainable energy future. Their call for a faster transition to renewables underscores the growing recognition within the energy sector of the urgent need to prioritise renewable energy to combat climate change.

In response to the letter, the Shell CEO Wael Sawan will meet with employees later this month to discuss his clean energy strategy.
