Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, the president of Cop28 and head of the United Arab Emirates oil company Adnoc, has been promoting carbon capture technology as a solution to climate change. However, a study by Global Witness reveals that it would take 343 years for Adnoc to capture the emissions it will produce in the next six years.

Critics argue that carbon capture is a misleading distraction from the urgent need to reduce fossil fuel production and emissions. Campaigners are concerned that Al Jaber will use the Cop28 summit to push technical solutions instead of advocating for significant and rapid emission reductions. The research also highlights the contradiction in Al Jaber’s position, as the UAE has extensive plans for expanding oil and gas operations, contributing significantly to the climate crisis.
