The Energy Ministers of G20 countries recently met in India to discuss climate issues and the transition to clean energy. However, they failed to agree on a plan to phase out fossil fuels, a major contributor to climate change and the resulting climate impacts.
The outcome document from the meeting was weak and did not set ambitious targets for reducing emissions or increasing renewable energy use. This was disappointing as the world faces severe climate crises.
The Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty initiative aims to end new fossil fuel development, phase out existing production, and support affected communities. However, without the G20’s commitment to meaningful climate action, progress remains uncertain.
