The Brazilian city of Belém has been chosen to host the Cop30 climate talks in November 2025. Belém is known as the gateway to the Amazon rainforest. Brazil’s President Lula da Silva believes that hosting the talks there will allow delegates from around the world to learn more about the region’s environment.

The United Nations has confirmed the endorsement of Belém’s bid, pending final approval at the Cop28 talks. President Lula has been vocal about addressing deforestation in the Amazon, and the choice of Belém over other cities like Manaus was influenced by its political significance in the region.

While hosting the talks in the Amazon sends a strong symbolic message, some are concerned about the logistical challenges and the need to reverse Brazil’s high deforestation rates before Cop30. The host of the climate talks rotates among the UN’s regional groupings, and Latin America and the Caribbean will be the focus in 2025.
