Ambitions for COP28: Shaping a Sustainable Future

By August 28, 2023Agenda, Climate Diplomacy

As the world shifts into the unknown, record breaking heat territory, all eyes are on G20 and COP28, crucial global summits that hold the promise of shaping a more sustainable future. Set against a backdrop of escalating climate impacts and a deluge of extreme weather events, COP28 represents a critical juncture for world leaders to demonstrate the courage and determination required to tackle the defining challenge of our time. Amidst escalating climate-related disasters, record-breaking temperatures, and environmental degradation, hopes and ambitions are high as we approach this pivotal moment in the fight against climate change. What are the COP28’s ambitions and what can we expect from it?

NDCs & SDGs: Turning Promises into Actions

One of the primary ambitions of COP28 is to renew and reinforce existing commitments made under the Paris Agreement. The global community aims to enhance the ambition of Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) to limit global temperature rise to well below 2 degrees Celsius, with efforts to limit it to 1.5 degrees Celsius. Nations need to enhance their climate pledges and accelerate the implementation of mitigation and adaptation measures.

Furthermore, COP28 aims to reinforce the synergies between climate action and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The conference intends to strengthen the alignment of climate policies with SDGs, particularly Goal 13 which focuses on climate action. By integrating climate action and sustainable development, COP28 can advance the achievement of global sustainability targets.

Holding the Private Sector accountable

The private sector plays a key role in driving climate action at COP28. It’s important for businesses to demonstrate genuine commitment to sustainability and innovation. Governments and the private sector should work together to create an enabling environment for green investments and the adoption of sustainable practices. Integrating environmental, social, and governance considerations into business strategies can make the private sector a powerful ally in the global climate effort.

However, caution is needed when considering the role of the private sector. Some companies have been accused of greenwashing or making superficial commitments. True dedication to climate action, not just for marketing purposes, is crucial. Transparency and accountability are necessary to ensure that businesses fulfil their commitments to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and support sustainable development goals.

While the private sector has potential, genuine commitment, transparency, and accountability are vital for meaningful contributions to global sustainability efforts at COP28.

Advancing Global Climate Ambition

COP28 aspires to raise global climate ambition by urging countries to adopt more ambitious targets in line with the latest scientific evidence. This involves encouraging countries to accelerate the transition to renewable energy, enhance energy efficiency, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and invest in sustainable infrastructure. The conference aims to promote innovative solutions and technologies that can catalyze the clean energy transition worldwide.

Strengthening International Cooperation and Partnerships

Another important goal for COP28 is to foster stronger international cooperation and partnerships. The conference provides an opportunity for nations to share best practices, exchange knowledge, and collaborate on solutions to tackle climate change. By strengthening international cooperation, countries can collectively address the challenges posed by climate change, such as financing adaptation and mitigation efforts in developing countries.

Enhancing Climate Resilience and Adaptation

The Global goal on adaptation and adaptation financing have remained a critical topic for global south countries, who are least GHG emissions contributors but are vulnerable to the major impacts of climate change. With the COP28 host, UAE, being part of the MENA region that also experiences vulnerability to climate impacts, there is hope that recognizing building climate resilience and adaptation strategies will be prioritised at COP28. The development and implementation of adaptation measures, particularly in vulnerable regions and communities, through knowledge-sharing and capacity-building initiatives, will enhance the resilience of societies and ecosystems to the impacts of climate change.

With COP28 on the horizon, the world anticipates a resolve to hasten worldwide climate efforts. Governments have yet to meet the Paris Agreement pledges and the global stocktake at COP28 will be a crucial juncture for renewing, upholding and honoring commitments aligned with the Paris Agreement. The private sector must be held accountable, the global climate ambition needs to rapidly advance, enhancing climate resilience and strengthening international cooperation.
